Well Laid Plans, Challenges & Travel to India

The first rule of traveling, as every traveler knows, is to expect the unexpected. Whether it’s the screaming child next to you on the plane or forgetting your cell phone in a taxi somewhere, the unexpected can easily disrupt your otherwise well laid plans.

Reaching for Gold

On Monday, Dec 28, I checked my American Airlines frequent flyer balance for the first time in ages and clicked on the elite qualifying information maybe for the first time ever… I discovered that I was one flight segment away from Gold status. For all you serious and jaded world travelers, I’m sure this sounds like no big deal since you easily reach Platinum status every year. Not me. Not yet.

Are you culturious? How do you travel?

I’ve been doing a bit of planning for 2010, including planning an exciting new project, and I’ve been trying to set some travel goals for next year when I came across this ad in the brand new travel magazine called AFAR. I love this magazine and have just become a subscriber. Too much travel literature is about escape or simply checking places off a list. This is nothing like that…

Buenos Dias, Buenos Aires!

My favorite experiences on this trip were… 1) Snacking on sweets with dulce de leche, particularly the brownie version at Chungo, 2) People watching and a lunch of empanadas and salad at Chez Cafe Resto, 3) Wandering through the stalls at the Feria de San Telmo in Plaza Dorrego on Sunday, 4) Eating Argentine BBQ with proveleta at Lo de Jesus in Palermo, 5) Buying Tango shoes at Comme il Fault …

On Returning & Looking Forward

I’m back and excited to tell you all the details about my first trip to South America. Stay tuned! A comprehensive post with lots of great info about attractions in Buenos Aires and plenty of great pictures is in the works, and it will be up soon! I felt a little off kilter for a few days after returning home. Maybe it was getting off the plane in flip flops to find a light *snow* coming down in Dallas, or maybe it was adjusting to the lack of sunlight in Dallas now compared to the long spring days in Buenos Aires…

In Anticipation of Buenos Aires

If our lives are dominated by a search for happiness, then perhaps few activities reveal as much about the dynamics of this quest – in all it’s ardour and paradoxes – than our travels. They express, however inarticulately, an understanding of what life might be about, outside of the constraints of work and the struggle for survival. – Alain De Botton, The Art of Travel

Visiting the Amalfi Coast

My first visit to Italy happened during my study abroad semester in college. I flew from Copenhagen to Rome and arrived after dark. I’ll never forget the beautiful taxi ride through the city and seeing the ruins lit up like pieces of art. It was breathtaking.
