“Berthe Morisot has been the least known and least appreciated of the great French Impressionist artists.” That’s the first sentence in the official catalogue from the only solo exhibition of her work in the United States in more than 30 years, before now. The current exhibit called Bethe Morisot: Women Impressionist showing at the Dallas…

For Love of San Francisco’s Summer Fog
It’s late afternoon in August as I write this, and the fog is rolling in from the Pacific in big billowy swaths. In so many ways, San Francisco isn’t like the rest of the country, but in no way is that more true than our weather. I relish the chill in the air during the summer… So much so that the fog features prominently in my morning writing, and I’ve been struggling to for a couple of summers to put into words exactly what I love about it. This is my love letter to San Francisco’s summer fog.
Playing Tourist at Home in San Francisco
When you’re new to a city, making a concerted effort to explore new neighborhoods and see the sights is a given, but over time the newness wears off. You’ve seen more by then, so you explore less, even when there are still things you want to see or do. It wasn’t that long ago for…
Pan American Unity Mural by Diego Rivera
If you’ve been following along, you’ll remember that there are four murals painted by Diego Rivera in the Bay Area and seeing some of Rivera’s murals has been on my personal bucket list since I studied his work in college. I set out to see all four of the murals in the Bay Area, and this…
A Day Trip to Pescadero
I love day trips. What’s not to love? You get all the benefits of a road trip — time on the open road, seeing home fade away in your rear view mirror, and watching new scenery appear outside your car window — but without any of the hassles of a real trip. I also love…
17 Bay Area Bloggers & Their San Francisco Favorites
This is the post I wanted to read when I was visiting San Francisco as a tourist and in my early days of moving to the city. I wanted a list lesser-known spots (not Trip Advisor attractions) to explore from people who know this city well. I couldn’t find one, so I wrote it myself….
Bioluminescent Night Kayaking on Tomales Bay
While I’m a city girl at heart, one of the things I was most looking forward to when I moved to San Francisco was spending much more time outdoors, hiking and exploring the natural beauty of the Bay Area. This from the woman who until last week still didn’t even own a pair of hiking boots!…
Still Life and Blossoming Almond Trees by Diego Rivera
Shortly after moving to San Francisco, I learned that one of my favorite artists also spent time here. Diego Rivera, the famous Mexican muralist, visited San Francisco in the early 1930s. It was a working honeymoon for him and his wife, the equally famous artist, Frida Kahlo. They spent time in the city as the celebrated guests of…
Songs for Homesick Texans
I love San Francisco, but sometimes I still really miss Texas. My oldest nephew started 2nd grade today, and another nephew — who we playfully call #2 or goo goo bear — got stitches last night on his left eyebrow, in the exact same spot as I had them! Whether celebrating, cuddling, or crying is needed,…
Swan Oyster Depot
With over 1300 reviews on Yelp, an appearance on Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations, and a long line that often snakes down the block, I won’t try to argue that Swan Oyster Depot is one of San Francisco’s best kept secrets. But I will tell you that I still meet locals who don’t know it, and I…
